Unitary Patents and the Unified Patent Court

The Intellectual Property Committee and In-House Counsel Committee invite you to a presentation to discuss the Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court (UP/UPC) that will be coming into effect on June 1, 2023.  We will explain the UP/UPC and discuss the effects that the UP/UPC may have on obtaining patents in Europe.  We will also discuss the options and decisions that patent owners may need to consider and implement.

Elizabeth Morris (Legal Director of Intellectual Property & Product, Pure Storage)

Elizabeth Morris is Legal Director of Intellectual Property & Product at Pure Storage, Inc. where she works closely with the CTO office to manage a rapidly growing patent portfolio through home grown ideas and acquisitions. She is excited to be a part of the cutting-edge patent management strategy of Pure. Her responsibilities also include integrating new acquisition portfolios, open-source projects, trademark portfolio management, patent litigation oversight, patent strategy development, and competitive analysis.

Ms. Morris has experience leading global team of attorneys and engineers in managing portfolios of over four thousand US and international patents. Ms. Morris is also a guest lecturer at Santa Clara University School of Law, University of Nebraska College of Law, and is a member of the Faculty of PLI (Practicing Law Institute). Previously, she practiced patent prosecution, licensing, and litigation at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP where she drafted numerous patent applications and developed specialized experience in patent prosecution highway procedures, fast prosecution mechanisms, and design patents.

Paul Keane (Partner, FRKelly)

Paul is a European patent attorney and Irish patent agent. Paul is a partner in FRKelly with over 15 years’ experience in the IP profession. He provides a wide range of intellectual property services to local and international clients, including universities. Paul specialises in electrical, electronic, software, telecommunications, networks, and ICT related inventions, and has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in these technical fields. Paul has developed a unique skill set combining his Patent attorney qualification with practical experience gained working as an Electronic Engineer in the Design Technology Evaluation Group where he was responsible for reverse engineering integrated electronic chips, infringement analysis and competitive analysis.

Paul’s particular specialism is drafting patent applications in the ICT field for prosecution in the EPO and USPTO. He regularly gives presentations at a national and international level on the topic of how best to patent software-related inventions with a focus on the differences in examination practice between the USA and Europe.  Paul also has considerable skill and experience in other IP areas including IP assignments, licenses and contracts, patent searching, patent infringement and enforcement.
