Call to Action

This has been an incredibly difficult year for our membership.  At the beginning, we all had to endure the rapid shift to a “new normal” with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which contributed to a struggling economy and uptick in harassment of Asian Americans.  That “new normal” was shattered with the senseless killing of George Floyd which rocked the nation and resulted in peaceful and powerful demonstrations by many, violent confrontations by some, and opportunistic looting by a few.

APABA Silicon Valley calls on all of our members to get involved in helping to rebuild and strengthen our community. There are many ways to take action – here are just a few suggestions:

  • As our local economy opens up, please support black-owned businesses, as well as businesses affected by looting and the shelter-in-place orders.

  • Exercise your constitutional right to assemble by participating in a rally or peaceful demonstration (and make sure to stay safe and healthy by wearing a face mask, maintaining social distance as much as possible, and respecting curfews).

  • And, perhaps most importantly, since effective engagement requires an informed perspective on complex issues, seek out and listen to different viewpoints. This recent post presents a starting point to explore the importance of allyship and how to be a good ally to our fellow diverse communities, as well as to reflect on the sensitive issue of our own internal biases.

We welcome other suggestions or resources to publicize in our newsletter. Please send your submissions to apabasv@gmail.com.
