Non-Traditional Career Paths for JDs

There are a wide number of career possibilities (both legal and non-legal) for JDs. Join APABA Silicon Valley at McDermott Will & Emery LLP on November 17 to listen to a panel of speakers from a variety of careers talk about how they shaped, and why they pursued, their alternative career paths. The panel discussion will be followed by a reception, which will be an opportunity for attendees to speak directly with the panelists and network. Panelists: 

Van Dang | Van is a Silicon Valley executive with more than 30 years of professional experience, starting her career as a corporate associate at Pillsbury Withrop Shaw Pittman LLP where she worked for 6 years. From there, she went in-house to Maxtor Corporation for 4 years before becoming the Deputy General Counsel at Cisco, where she stayed 18 years. Since leaving Cisco, Van has taken on numerous advisory and mentoring roles in the Asian American and start-up communities. Van received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law, and her B.A., from UCI.

Odele Hawkins | Odele Hawkins is a Director of Talent and Development for Pac-12 Networks. Formerly, Odele served as a manager of Business and Legal Affairs for Big Ten Network and worked as a wardrobe stylist, set costumer, production coordinator and manager in TV/film production. She was a litigation associate at Gillio & Associates and Gomberg, Sharfman, Gold & Ostler, P.C. Odele received her J.D. from Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her B.A., from Wellesley.

Rachel Ma | Rachel is currently a corporate/commercial attorney at Axiom and also serves as treasurer on the APABA Silicon Valley board. Prior to her current role, she worked as a contract attorney for several AmLaw 100 firms in San Francisco. She also worked as junior in-house corporate and commercial counsel at several Bay Area technology companies. Rachel received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law, and a dual B.A. in Chinese and Political Science with a focus in International Relations from UCLA. 

Samorn Selim | Samorn is an entrepreneur and a career coach, helping students and professionals achieve their career goals. She was formerly an Associate Director for the Graduate Class of UC Hastings College of Law and an Associate Director for Private Sector Counseling and Programs for UC Berkeley School of Law where she co-authored a job search guide and developed and implemented speed meet-and-greet reception between students and employers from boutique and small firms. Prior to her coaching career, Samorn practiced at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP. Samorn received her J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), and her B.A. from UC Berkeley.
