APABA Silicon Valley Condemns Anti-AAPI Hate Violence

APABA Silicon Valley (“APABA”) condemns not only the horrific mass shooting yesterday that targeted AAPI businesses and left numerous AAPI women murdered, but also the skewed and racist media coverage (or lack thereof) of this and the rise in anti-AAPI hate violence.  Nonprofit organization Stop AAPI Hate reports that there were almost 4,000 anti-AAPI hate incidents from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021 nationwide.  And since many hate crimes go unreported, the actual number of attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is surely higher.  Over 700 of such attacks have occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area alone, many against elderly simply walking down the street in broad daylight.

APABA applauds President Biden’s actions to address the rise in anti-AAPI hate violence, including his signing of a memorandum in January 2021 that denounces discrimination directed at the Asian American and Pacific Islander community throughout the pandemic, as well as his statements during his first primetime address to the nation on March 11, 2021, when he further condemned the anti-AAPI hate, stating “[i]t’s wrong, it's un-American, and it must stop.”

APABA further applauds the law firms and companies that have issued statements condemning anti-AAPI hate violence and asking to #StopAsianHate.

APABA calls on its member law firms and companies to stand up for social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, by issuing a statement to condemn anti-AAPI hate incidents and by considering donating to the nonprofit organizations providing direct services to #StopAsianHate.
