Fred Korematsu challenged the United States government's unlawful incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. After fighting to vindicate the civil rights of 120,000 Japanese Americans, Korematsu went on to speak up against the detention of racial profiling of Muslim Americans after 9/11 and the wrongful prosecution of a Chinese American scientist for alleged espionage.
APABA Silicon Valley and the Asian Law Alliance are co-sponsoring the annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, which will feature a series of talks and round-table discussions focusing on the experience of Japanese Americans during World War II, the legacy of Korematsu, and the importance of bystander intervention in anti-Asian incidents.
The program will feature Robert Handa (Emmy award winning journalist), Prof. Margaret Russell (SCU School of Law), and Usman Alloo (Programs Coordinator for the Council on American Islamic Relations of the Bay Area).
1.0 hour of General MCLE credit will be awarded for this event.
