Privacy Rights and Health Security of the Undocumented: The Impacts of Pandemic Surveillance

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Committee of APABA - Silicon Valley and the San Francisco and Silicon Valley KnowledgeNet chapters of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) are excited to present this panel on “Privacy Rights and Health Security of the Undocumented: The Impacts of Pandemic Surveillance.”

As public health officials and researchers struggled to track and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, data collection and surveillance technology were solutions that offered access to timely data about the disease. However, the pandemic has widened the inequities of privacy rights and health security for low-income and marginalized individuals, especially for undocumented citizens. This panel will discuss the impacts of pandemic surveillance technology on the privacy rights and health security of undocumented citizens.

Panelists:

  • Manjit Gill, Senior Corporate Counsel, Employment and Compliance, Bang Energy

  • Shruti Rana, Assistant Dean for Curricular and Undergraduate Affairs; Diversity Officer; Director of the International Law and Institutions Program; Professor, International Law Practice and Class of 1963 Wells Program Professor, Indiana University Bloomington
