APABA-SV Now Accepting Submissions for 2015 Officer, Board, and Committee Positions

Submission Deadline: 5:00PM Sunday, November 30, 2014

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (“APABA-SV”) is now accepting submissions from those interested in serving as a 2015 APABA-SV Officer, Board Member, Committee Chair or Committee Member.  General requirements, responsibilities and a list of positions are provided below.  Please submit your Statement of Interest by 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 30, 2014 to apabasv.nom2015@gmail.com.  Please note reference code “Nom2015” in the RE line of your e-mail.

Your Statement of Interest (65 words or less) should indicate the position(s) desired, qualifications (prior service/activity with APABA-SV, other bar associations, community work, goals for the position, etc.) and any other relevant information.

If you presently serve as a Board Member, Committee Chair or Committee Member of APABA-SV, you must also submit a Statement of Interest if you would like to return to the same or different position(s).

Officer / Board General Requirements and Responsibilities:

• The Board manages "the business and affairs of the Association . . ."
• Must be a current dues-paid member of APABA-SV
• Must be an attorney in good standing with the bar of those states where he or she is licensed to practice
• Attend and participate in monthly Board meetings, either via phone or in person when possible (two or more unexcused absences may result in removal from the Board)
• Support APABA-SV events and fundraising activities (including using best efforts to secure sponsorship for at least one table at APABA-SV's annual banquet)
• Participate in at least one major Board initiative (may be in conjunction with a committee project/event)
• Serve on at least one APABA-SV committee

Committee Chair / Member General Requirements and Responsibilities:

• Each committee must be co-chaired by at least one Board member
• Co-chairs must plan and lead committee meetings and activities
• Co-chairs must provide monthly reports to the Board on committee activities
• Committee members must be current dues-paid members of APABA-SV
• Open to all attorneys, law school students or graduates, and government officials who agree to abide by APABA-SV's Bylaws
• Attend committee meetings and actively participate in at least one major committee activity

Officers*:

• President.  The President oversees and guides the business affairs of APABA-SV, subject to the direction and control of the Board.
• Vice President, External. The External Vice President occupies a public-facing role and is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with the greater community, including other bar associations, community and public interest groups, etc.  The External Vice President serves as APABA-SV’s “secretary of state” and performs the duties of the President in the absence of the acting President.
• Vice President, Internal (two positions).  Two Internal Vice Presidents assist the President in management of APABA-SV by overseeing its committees.
• Vice President, Communications.  The Vice President of Communications oversees the APABA-SV’s public communications and related committees, including oversight of the bar association’s website, regular newsletters, press releases, etc. 
• Secretary.  The Secretary oversees adherence to APABA-SV’s Bylaws and the integrity of Officer and Board actions through proper record-keeping, provision of notice, and other duties incident to the office.
• Treasurer.  The Treasurer serves as principal accounting and financial officer for APABA-SV.

Longtime leaders and role models in APABA-SV and the APA legal community, Valerie, Quyen, and Catharina have received this recognition for their career accomplishments and leadership in the practice of tech law. APABA-SV proudly celebrates Valerie, Quyen, and Catharina's well-deserved recognition as outstanding leaders in their field.

APABA-SV Applauds Nomination Of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar For Associate Justice Of The California Supreme Court

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (“APABA-SV”) applauds Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s nomination of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar for associate justice of the California Supreme Court.  Cuéllar is slated to fill the vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of the Honorable Marvin R. Baxter on January 4, 2015.  If confirmed, Cuéllar’s name will appear on the November 4 ballot for voter approval of a 12 year term beginning January 2015.  APABA-SV is confident that the California voters will support this amazing appointment.

Cuéllar is a longtime member and supporter of the APABA-SV community, and previously served as keynote speaker for APABA-SV’s 2011 Scholarship And Commitment To Diversity Awards Banquet.  “We are thrilled with Tino Cuéllar’s nomination to the California Supreme Court,” said Brian Wong, President of APABA-SV.  “His presence on the Supreme Court will be of immense benefit to the State of California.  All Californians will benefit from his immense experience and legal scholarship.”

Cuéllar, 41, has been a Stanford Law School professor since 2001 and was appointed Stanley Morrison Professor of Law in 2012.  Cuéllar has been director of Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies since 2013 and Professor of Political Science, by courtesy, at Stanford's School of Humanities and Sciences since 2010.  He served as co-director of Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation from 2011 to 2013.

Representative of many Californians, Cuellar’s family emigrated from Mexico to the Imperial Valley of California when Cuellar was 14.  After Graduating from Calexico High School,  Cuéllar went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College, a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in political science from Stanford University.

Cuéllar served as special assistant to the President for Justice and Regulatory Policy at the White House Domestic Policy Council in 2009 and 2010 and was co-chair of the Obama-Biden Transition's Immigration Policy Working Group in 2008 and 2009.  He served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mary M. Schroeder at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 2000 to 2001 and as senior advisor to the Under Secretary for Enforcement at the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 1997 to 1999.

APABA-SV commends Governor Brown for his nomination of Cuéllar to the California Supreme Court, and looks forward to Cuéllar’s confirmation by the Commission on Judicial Appointments.

Jean Kim joined the firm (then Stiller + Buxbaum) in 2004 and became a Partner in 2013. Mr. Kim obtained his J.D. degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1999 and was admitted to the California state bar the same year. He is also admitted in Hawaii and the District of Columbia. He received his BA and MA from the University of California, Berkeley. He practiced for 3 years in Hawaii in business immigration and e-business, helping corporate clients establish a U.S. presence and receiving the PacificNews.Net 2002 Hawaii's Top High Technology Leaders Award. He also served as the President of the Korean American Bar Association Hawaii for two years, organizing and hosting the 2002 International Association of Korean Lawyers annual conference. He has been on the Board of the Korean American Bar Association of Northern California since 2004, serving as Director and Secretary. He is also serving as Treasurer of the International Association of Korean Lawyers.

APABA-SV Charity Foundation and BALIF Joint Scholarship

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley ("APABA-SV") Charity Foundation and Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom ("BALIF") are pleased to announce a special scholarship for law students who have demonstrated commitment to the Asian Pacific American community and the LGBT community.

Applications must be received by 5:00 pm, July 31, 2014. Interviews will be held on August 17, 2014.
